Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in a written letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought his aid to direct the Medical Council of India (MCI) in postponing the final year MD (Doctor of Medicine) MS (Master of Surgery) examinations till December 2020. He had stated that the final year resident doctors play an important role in the activities against Covid-19 in the State.
Earlier, the Board of Governors of MCI had directed all Universities to complete the final year MD/MS examinations by June 30. The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik advised the State government to conduct these examinations from July 15.
As per the CM, it is these resident doctors who are fighting the corona virus from the frontlines in all the Government of Maharashtra and Municipal Medical Colleges. Maharashtra is one of the worst hit States in the country with close to 1.5 lakh cases. If these exams are conducted, then there would be a severe shortage in the number of efficient doctors at this critical juncture. It is these doctors who help in the clinical management of the corona patients in the State. The government was already under the ire of many including the coalition allies BJP for alleged shortfalls in combating Covid-19.
The resident doctors were also in dilemma with the current situation as whether they would fight Covid-19 or prepare for their final year exams. There were even demands from their side for cancelling these exams. These doctors have warmly welcomed the move of the CM in this regard.
The CM’s letter also requested for the delaying of Entrance examinations for Super-speciality courses like DM/MCh. The State government had already decided not to conduct it’s own Board exams for the 10th and 12th standard students. It had also told the Bombay High Court that it cannot allow the 10th and 12th standard exams of the Indian School Certificate Examination (ICSE) to be conducted, that was earlier decided to be held in July owing to the current circumstances.
